One of the first things I noticed when playing live was that I had a tough time reading some of the players. Good live players are confident, aggressive, and intimidating. Players like that are successful. There is a lot of pressure at the table. It is a lot harder to call or bluff when some scary muscular guy is staring you down then say an intimidating looking person. On top of that, there are people coming and going, and there is a large variety of experience at the table.
One of the times I was in Las Vegas, I was playing 1/2 NL. A new guy sat to my left. First hand I get, KK. I raise in middle position, he calls. Flop is AA10. I hated the double ace. I through out my normal size flop bet. He grabbed his chips and through in a monstrous re-raise. It had to be close to $150. I sat in my seat for a minute. I looked at him. The raise made no sense to me... I was going back and forth in my head, thinking or over thinking. I dropped it. He mucks. I am sitting there, a little bit vexed because I don't know what he had. Nobody likes losing with kings, and nobody likes getting outplayed. So while I am sitting there thinking about it, the guy orders a drink. The kicker is, you could tell he was completely smashed. Guy probably didn't even know he was at a casino.
So there is a wider variety of people playing at the casinos, and physical appearance does make an impact. Not only for others, but also for you.
When you play online, you don't see a real person. You can't pick up on physical tells. Your mind isn't preoccupied with social inhibitions. This leaves the mind to focus more on the mathematic side of the game. How often has this person raised? How big is he betting? How long did it take him to react? There is a ton of information out there. Its out there when you play live, but the mind tends to be preoccupied with the social situation.
With that in mind, the online player is much more fit to play live then the live player to play online. All of the skills used by the online player are still there, but now there is even more information to add. For the live player, a key component to the game is missing.
