Austria is in the heart of Europe and boarded on all sides by several other European and Eastern European countries including Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The capital of this beautiful country is Vienna which is situated beside the River Danube.

But certainly the architecture in the country's capital Vienna and Salzburg is extremely interesting this country has so much more to offer to those who choose to visit it. Along with its mountains there are lakes and rivers where one can participate in a variety of different outdoor activities from mounting climbing and skiing to kayaking.

However, when you actually visit Austria will depend largely on just what sorts of activities it is you want to do whilst there. If you want to go hiking or mountain biking then the summer is the ideal time for your holiday. But for those who are interested in skiing or snowboarding of winter is the best time to plan your holiday to Austria.

The warmest months that Austria has occur between April and October, but these two months can be slightly cooler than the ones in between so bring some warm clothing if visiting at these times. For those who do not like it too hot then avoid the months of July and August as temperatures can become very high and unbearable in some cases. Plus you will also find that this is their high season and so prices on accommodation etc. are much higher.

Also another reason for avoiding the months of July and August is because of the high temperatures many of the major attractions will be closed at this time. So if you intend to visit the Spanish Riding School or go to the Opera then choose another time rather than these.

However, although these attractions may be closed there are plenty of other events going on throughout the year. Certainly when it comes to music festivals these seem to be continuous in Austria. In Vienna in January there are the New Year concerts with their lavish balls. Then in February the Shrovetide Carnival (Fasching) takes place and this celebrates the return of spring.

Then on the second Thursday after Whitsun more carnivals take place to celebrate Corpus Christi some of which are held on lakes. One such one is the one that is held at Salzkammergut. But really the highlight of the music festivals each year in Austria is the Wiener Festwochen which takes place from May until the middle of June.

Certainly what you will find if you choose to go to Austria on holiday there is so much more to do than just the skiing in winter. For those who are after a bit more culture or just want time to relax and unwind then a visit to this beautifully landlocked country should be considered.
