For a couple trying to have a baby, there is nothing more heartbreaking than suffering a miscarriage. It is often misunderstood, and can even be met with presumed insensitivity by family members who think the couple should just get over it. More often that not it should be understood that family is only trying to help, but their comments can be nonetheless painful in an emotionally sensitive time.
For a couple suffering from a miscarriage, the most important thing is to allow time to grieve. There can be no worse pain for many couples, and after celebrating the joy of getting pregnant, a miscarriage can feel like the end of the line. It's important to know though that all hopes of carrying a healthy baby to term are not lost in the slightest. Many women suffer from a miscarriage in their first pregnancy, it is often because a women's body just wasn't quite prepared for the drastic changes taking place, or the fetus was unhealthy in some way.
After initial grieving, many couples are determined more than ever to have another baby. It's important to know that the second pregnancy will in no way replace the first one and that while the pain may subside, the experience will never be forgotten. Its essential for a couple wanting to try again to talk with a doctor about all of the options and risks. Many doctors recommend two to three normal cycles before attempting to conceive again, some even say as much as six months to a year is necessary for the body to repair itself. Getting pregnant too soon after miscarriage can cause problems for the second pregnancy.
Its also important to know what to expect from family when attempting to conceive again after miscarriage. Some family members may react positively, while others may suggest the couple wait longer to heal. It is not only important to hear what family has to say as they are after all looking out only for the couple's best interest, but it's all important to know what is right for you and your partner.
While many couples may fear that after one miscarriage their chances of carrying a baby full term are jeopardized, this isn't necessarily the case at all. 85% of women who've suffered a miscarriage in the past are able to carry full term, while 75% are able to who have miscarried more than once. Prenatal care of the highest quality is often the best factor determining the outcome, and emotional wellbeing can also go a long way! There are many measures a mother can take to increase her chances of carrying full term and all can be discussed with a doctor to make a couple's parenthood dream come true!
