Poodles make great pets, and are one of the smartest dog breeds that are kept as pets. Poodles are one of the most interesting breeds, due to their colorful history and the fact that there are three different sizes. Below are some poodle facts that might help you decide if this breed is for you:

The American Kennel Club sanctions three varieties of Poodles. The largest is the Standard, which reaches over 15 inches at the top of the shoulders. The Miniature is next in size and fully-grown will reach 10 inches at the top of the shoulders. The smallest is the Toy Poodle, who will weigh in at 6 to 8 pounds and be under 10 inches at the shoulder.

While Toy Poodles are the smallest of three varieties of Poodle, there are smaller versions that aren't recognized by the AKC. These are known as Tiny Toy Poodles, which weigh between 4 and 6 pounds, and Teacup Poddles, who weigh in at a diminutive 2 to 4 pounds.

One of the most important benefits of owning a poodle is that they don't shed and are hypoallergenic, which makes them the perfect pet for those with allergies. Another one of the interesting Poodle facts is that they don't have the strong odor often associated with other breeds.

Poodles are one of the oldest breeds of dogs, and we know this from carvings on Greek and Roman coins that resemble the breed. The AKC recognized Poodles in 1890 and they were the most popular breed of dog in America by the 1960's.

Poodles date back to the 1500's and were favorites in France, Germany and Russia. They remain the national dog of France. Germans utilized Poodles for hunting and water retrieving, and the name Poodle derives from the German word Pudel which is an abbreviation of Pudlehund ("splashing dog"). The Standard Poodle was the first variety of Poodle to be bred.

Poodles can have a variety of hair types. It can be coarse and wiry to soft and wavy. There are also a variety of hair cuts that a Poodle can be be given. I am sure you are familiar with the classic show clip, but there is also the pet clip, the puppy clip, the English saddle clip, and the continental clip. Some poodles also have their coat corded.

Poodles are an intelligent, spunky, and high energy breed of dog. They love to interact with their humans as much as possible. Poodles need challenging toys and activities that keep them from being bored. Poodles are good protectors and field dogs. Potty training a poodle is easier than most other breed due to their quick learning skills.

Fortunately for poodle lovers, the breed tends to have a lengthy lifespan. According to some of the Poodle facts available, the Standard Poodles average an 11.5 year lifespan, Miniature Poodles often live to 14 and Toy Poodles can live for as long as 17 years! Of course, these averages assume that the dog is of normal weight and has an active, healthy lifestyle.
