You keep good care of your dog, but what of those who by some accident or circumstances end up alone? The pound may be the end destination for an unfortunate number, as even healthy dogs will be put down if they can't be rehomed elsewhere.

The lucky ones will end up in an animal shelter; with a possibility of being rehomed with a new family; the shelters have encouraged neutering and spaying. This means fewer unwanted puppies from dogs without owners.

Still, some animals will end up in shelters, often through no fault of their own. Their owner may have died, or become unable to look after them, or worse, been unwilling to look after them.

On the flip side, some might end up in shelters because they were too much to handle for their owner, they may have become too boisterous around the children or had some behavioral issue.

Adopting from an animal shelter is a really worthy way of getting a new pet. Why buy a new puppy when there are hundreds of animals wishing desperately for a new home.

The points to remember when you choose a dog from a shelter are something to think about. Usually there is no clue as to treatment or health of the animal prior to its arrival at the shelter, so you might be in for a surprise in terms of chronic infections or inherited disease.

The character of the dog will also be somewhat a mystery, so if you are choosing a dog for a vulnerable household (ie one with children or old people) choose carefully and try to spend time with the dog first.

You will have to be patient as the dog settles into your home, and be prepared for the odd accident, as it can be very stressful for an animal to change locations to unfamiliar circumstances.

The Humane Society is the largest organization for animal protection in the USA. Its central offices are based in Washington DC. It works on a local level with many regional branches across the USA. It is funded by donation.

The work of the Humane society includes looking after the rights of both wildlife and domestic animals. It carries out its wok through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and field work.

The branches provide sanctuary for unwanted animals, which are available for adoption for suitably vetted candidates.

If you want to help the Humane Society you can do so in several ways. You can adopt an animal. You can give a donation. You can volunteer your time.

All of these will help the Humane Society in their work. Animal shelters are the last resort for sick, injured and homeless animals. Make sure you don't forget about the animals no-one remembered.
