This money may be utilized to pay off any medical or travel expenses incurred by any one of the contributors while on a trip to some foreign land. Such travel insurance is also referred to as overseas visitor insurance and is extended to cover medical expenses, accidents, loss of belongings, delay of departure, loss of passport etc.

You can make a visitor's health insurance on behalf of another person. Thus you can make an insurance plan for your family members, friends, etc in their absence as well. Whenever you join any visitor's insurance policy make sure that the insurance company is having a center in the country which you are about to visit. For example if you are about to visit Canada, it is wise that you join an insurance plan from a company which has center in Canada.

The reason for such an arrangement lies in the fact that a policy bought in the travel destination is easily acceptable in that land. For example, if you may have to undergo medical treatment in the foreign country, you would ask for claims from the insurance company.

In such a situation the clinic or hospital where you take the treatment can contact the local center of that company and so the dues can be settled easily. Generally hospitals or clinics refuse to acknowledge insurance claims of a foreign company not having a local center.

The type of visitor's health insurance which you may need depends upon some things like, the number of times you are about to travel, the risks associated with your journey and stay at that country, or any current medical problem you may be suffering from, etc. Also do not forget to inspect the trustworthiness of the service of the insurance company in any foreign country.

Ideally you should make a visitor's insurance policy only when you have all important documents in your hand. The documents like visa, passport, airline tickets, etc, are all very important. If you are about to travel to a country which is recognized as a 'high risk country' then visitor's medical insurance is extremely necessary for you.
